Are Maltipoos, Cavapoos and Dachshunds Hypoallergenic? An Honest Answer

It is one of the first questions allergy-prone families ask us, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a marketing one. No dog is truly hypoallergenic, but some are far more manageable than others.

Allergies to dogs are usually a reaction to proteins found in dander, saliva and urine, not to hair itself. That is why the word hypoallergenic is misleading. What actually helps is a coat that sheds very little, so less dander is carried around your home on loose hair.

Where our breeds land

• Maltipoo: the low-shedding, fleece-like coat means less dander in circulation, which is why many mild allergy sufferers do well with them. Not guaranteed, but often the most manageable of the three.
• Cavapoo: also low-shedding, with the same general advantage. The curlier the individual coat, the less it tends to shed.
• Dachshund: a normal shedding coat, so less suitable for shedding-sensitive allergy sufferers, especially the long-haired and smooth varieties.

Test before you commit

If someone in your home has known dog allergies, do not rely on a label. Spend time around the breed, ideally the specific type of coat, before deciding. A reaction can take a little exposure to show up, so more than a few minutes is wise.

What actually reduces reactions at home

• Keep the coat groomed. Regular brushing and bathing remove loose dander at the source.
• Keep the bedroom a dog-free zone if a family member is sensitive.
• Vacuum and wash bedding often, and consider a HEPA air filter in shared spaces.
• Wash hands after handling and before touching the face.
