Our Breeds With Children: Building a Safe, Happy Bond

Maltipoos, Cavapoos and Dachshunds can all be wonderful family dogs. A safe, happy bond between a puppy and a child is built on supervision, gentle rules and a little planning, not on the breed alone.

Families ask us which breed is best with kids. The truthful answer is that temperament varies more between individuals than between these three breeds, and that the biggest factor is how the household manages the relationship in the early weeks.

How the breeds tend to do

• Cavapoo: often the easiest with young children thanks to a sociable, forgiving nature and a slightly sturdier build.
• Maltipoo: gentle and affectionate, and excellent with calm, older children, but genuinely small and best supervised closely around toddlers.
• Dachshund: devoted and playful, and a good fit for families who will teach careful handling to protect the long back.

The rules that make it work

• Always supervise young children and a puppy together. No exceptions in the first weeks.
• Give the puppy an escape. A crate or bed that children are taught is off limits lets a puppy opt out of play.
• Teach gentle hands. No tails, ears or squeezing, and no picking the puppy up without an adult.
• Let sleeping puppies lie. A puppy that is resting or eating should be left alone.
• Involve the kids in kindness. Feeding, gentle training and calm play build a bond that grabbing never will.

Reading the puppy

Teach the whole family to notice when a puppy has had enough: turning away, lip-licking, yawning, or trying to leave. Respecting those signals is how a puppy learns that children are safe and predictable, which is the foundation of a lifelong bond.
